What 3 gear do you have? All synchro with a top loading case? If so, it will probably bolt up to a proper manual tranny bell on a 302.
I tried to find the bolt pattern specs at:

But I didn't find them. I know they are out there. Some pics on that site and other info.
I swapped out a 303 all synchro 3 gear for a toploader 4 gear in my '65 Mustang and I really enjoyed the difference.
Another one that will bolt up is the 5 speed T 5.
If you have & want to keep 3 on the tree, you may have to find a 303 3 speed for that 302. Millions of them around.
After all that, I realized I haven't been much help, as this was a simple question..... You asked if it could work, all I can say is "Yea, it could, if the bolt pattern and input shafts are right....."
