Well new problems occur and depleted funds. Can anyone please tell me if about 150miles/tank sounds about right. I have an '86XLT 2.9 auto and I dont know the size of the tank so if someone could help me on that too.
Any help at all is highly appreciated.
Tim
Um my dads BII got anyware from 275-325 on a tank and it had the 2.9 also. 150 for a tank dosn't sound right how much fuel do you put in after 150 maybe you have a bad fuel gage?
ive got an 86 b2 xlt with 2.9 v6 and a 23 gallon tank, when i fill up ( on empty) i usually put in 15 gallons and my trip is at 366-386. i do alot of hiway driving so im getting pretty good mpg, id probably get better if i wasn't pulling a mountain.
well every time i fill it up all the way....ans still get like 150 b4 it gets to the bottom but the gas light doesnt come on. I was thinking about running it completly out of gas to see if its just my gauge but ive heard EFI doesnt like being run dry because it will suck the things that accumulate in the tank. Any sugestions?
EFI doesn't like to be run dry. The main reason is that the fuel pump motor uses the gas in the tank as a "coolant" to keep it from overheating. When you run the tank dry, you run the risk of burning your fuel pump up.
Next time you fill up, see how much gas it takes. Sometimes the floats on the sending unit get saturated or something with gasoline and don't float, so that's a good possibility.
As for my experience, I run ~22 mpg, mostly highway.
I have an 88 5 speed and get 23 mpg. I fill the 23 gal. tank and re-set the trip odometer. After I've gone about 250 miles the gas gauge needle is bottomed out. I keep going and fill it up at about 475 miles. Works for me.
I have a 88 bronco 2 and I only get at the most 230 miles to a tank if I am lucky.
People just tell me it is because it has to push alot of wieght around.
> is there a way to check if my guage is wrong....
Yes, it requires removing the dash and grounding the gauge so it pegs all the way. The most likely problem is the sender in the fuel tank is bad, which is part of the $80 pump. Though there is no "kit" to fix them, you can repair them with parts from other Fords. Just takes a "real" parts guy and not a fiche reader.
Though by the time you remove your skid plate, tank straps, and drop the tank, you might as well replace the whole thing since sometimes you mess up the lock ring removing the pump.
You should get 15-18 mpg with a 2.9/auto/unlocked hubs and about 21 mpg with a 2.9/manual/unlocked hubs. I used my trip odometer and just filled whenever it got to 250 miles. That will leave you an eighty mile reserve.
If you can smell gas, your truck is not running right. Even without a cat. a BII exhaust is fairly clean. What I would do is look first for a gas leak! Make sure you do not have any rust holes on the bottom OR the top of your tank.
i get 18mpg on my auto unlocked hubs. locking my hubs dont make a diff in gas for me. but check you air charge temp sensor it could be dirty. you o2 sensor could be dirty. porlly those to causing the bad milage. thats why i get such poor milage.
