I have an 83 ranger 2.8l 4x4 with standard 5 speed tranny. Will an engine from a 88 ranger 4x4 fit it? and also if i left my current engine will the 88 tranny fit my 83 engine?

 

The engine and tranny will fit. However, the 88 2.9 is fuel injected, so you will need the harness, computer and electric fuel pump to set it up properly in your 83, but it's done all the time. Just do your research and take your time.

Honestly, Wendell says it very well. Bolt in except for the EFI and fuel pump and lift pump and possible catalytic converter difference. It is best done with a donor truck handy. Close at hand. Unless you will put the older fuel system on the newer engine, which is a lot simpler.
