Hope I can get a response before I leave work. On the way to work this morning, all of a sudden the Amp guage pegged, showing overcharging, the little amp idiot light came on, my headlights went bright and then all returned to normal. This happened intermittently on the way in to work, I am hoping I can get home (28 miles away) is this a voltage regulator/rectifier problem or does it look like I will be replacing the whole alternator (OUCH=Expensive!) Thanks for any assistance. If there is any simple checks I can do, I do have an DVM here at work.
An update, and hopefully someone can give me some assistance. The engine is a 3.0 with air, although I have disconnected the A/C since the clutch went out on it last summer.
On the way home the ammeter pegged itself as well as the battery light coming on. This was with no lights, nor heater on. It happened once more before I got to a shop. They checked the charging system and said it was charging normally, diode ripple was normal, voltage normal. As I drove away it happened again. Aaarrgghhh!
Should I just go ahead and replace the darn thing, as I believe the rectifier/regulator are part of the alternator?? Please can someone help here?
On a limited budget and cannot afford to take to mechanic.
Ok, thanks guys, I just pulled the alternator, the place I went to before used a handheld tester, I am going to have it bench tested. One thing I did notice is that it has an internal fan hopefully it will be the regulator and I can still just replace that.
