Hello danveard, Welcome to FTE hope some of us can help you solve some of your promblems and in the long run maybe even save some of that green you work so hard for.
On the older model Rangers located on the firewall was a sensor called a MAP sensor if this was bad it would cause a bad surge and also lots of black smoke, it has a oval shaped plug on it and a single vacum line running to it, the throttle poistion sensor if it is outta ranger could cause a surge at a certain speed also....The throttle senor is suppose to be within a certain range from closed throttle to wide open, I am sorry I seem to have forgotten the range, so sorry maybe some of the other guys will read this and help you with that range, Good Luck hope this helps point you in some direction....Let us know...

No I am sure you probally don't have a MAP sensor, just a little note as to what caused this in older models, in case some of the others are having some of the same promblems you are having... I agree with Ken, I to would try cleaning the MAF sensor, hope you get the promblem worked out ...Good Luck...
