ECT location and replacment

ECT location and replacment
New to this board (used to be on ****z Korner a lot) and I need help.
Got an 87 Bronco II 2.9l that is running off and on rough, lean, black smoke that would indicate O2 sensor open loop but that was replaced this summer. The problem is intermittent and it once I disconnected the battery and it went away! Read codes a while back and remembers Code 21 ECT.
Question:
Could a malfunctioning ECT cause the open loop?
Where is the ECT?
Is it easy to replace (its very cold but I'm very poor)?
Any help would be very welcome
