My father-in-law has a 2002 7.3L and is stumped as to why he is having to change the Air Filter every 3-5K miles. It seems to be getting gunked up with oil from somewhere. He asked me to post and see what the experts thought of this?
I would say that the crankcase vent is filling the air filter full of crap my 2000 use to do that but I would say to do a search for a ccv mod and you will find your answers.
Having a certain amount of a dark sticky oily substance is normal. The longer you go before changing it the darker and more oily it gets. Changing it out every 5,000 or so miles is also normal. You may want to switch your original filter system out for a cold air induction/high air flow system such as the AFE. This is a reusuable, cleanable cone shaped filter. It helps a great deal with keeping the EGT's lower and you never have to replace it. I have also heard nothing but good regarding the Tymar system as well.
I've got the home made version of the tymar and I wouldn't have anything but it and it was under $50 to make. The orignal air box on the 7.3's leak and let dirt in so that is why I will never go back but ford does make a severe duty air box that is a major improvement but is alot more expensive. I would do the ccv mod before I thought about changing the air intake just to save alittle on the filters.
