Help!!! Timing problem.

Help!!! Timing problem.
Need help bad. 79 460 mild build. I tried to do a recurve on my stock distributor. The mechanical advance was using a 16L slot. I rotated th plate 180' and am now using a 21L slot. I bent the springs in just a little to have advance come in earlier. Now all I get is a backfire through the carb or exaust. What did I do???? Please help.
