Winch mount?

I recently bought a winch bumper for my truck.('79 F-250) Put the bumper on and drove around without a winch for a while. Finally got around to buying a winch only to find that the plate where the winch is supposed to mount on the bumper is not large enough to fit the mounting pattern on the winch. It is plenty wide just not deep enough. Do you guys think I should weld an extension of some sort or just bolt down another 1/4" plate on top of it then bolt the winch to that? I know this sounds kind of confusing so if you have any questions just ask. Just want some expert opinions before I do anything stupid. thanks

So you only need the plate on the bumper where you mount the winch to be higher by a 1/4"?

Cut out a 1/4" plate spacer to sit on top of your bumper plate. Drill holes in the spacer to match the mounting holes in the bumper plate. Throw the winch on that and bolt it down through the spacer and bumper plate. The spacer won't be load bearing but I'd probably weld it in just to make the bumper that much more stout anyways. Sounds fine.

i knew this was going to get confusing haha. Let's just say that the mounting pattern is 10"X4.5" (i think) the mounting plate that is on the bumper is about 20" wide but only 10" deep so when you consider the space that I need for the difference between the face of the winch and the actual bolt of the winch I am goin to need at least another 2-3 inches of depth. (pretend as if your looking at it from the top of the bumper) I'll try and draw something up on the computer.

Set the winch up where you want it. Then fabricate what ever is necessary to mount it where it needs to be.

If I have the picture right, you need another 2 to 3 inches on the backside of the bumper?

Your idea is simple enough to work. Just use a high tinsle strength rod like a 7018 and butt weld the front, lap weld the back, do whatever to the sides. Throw a couple plug welds in the center if you like, it's your party. If you're worried about the 1/4 inch bending or warping, a 4 to 6 inch strip on the bottom, centered over the weld should make it hell for stout. Lap weld the front edge, add some material in the back to fill the gap and butt weld everything together.

Just one thing about 7018, it's a low penetation, low flux filler rod. Your prep makes the weld, no rust or paint in the weld area.

Good luck, Mike

thanks very much hypoid. All I needed was the reassurance that that would be strong enough. I can weld very well, but instead of arc I'll probably mig it. but only with a serious mig welder. a lincoln (dont know model) with a 3-phase 220V input. trust me its plenty strong haha. thanks
