88 Bronco II 2.9 to 4.0 swap

The 2.9 tranny WILL bolt up, but it is not recomended b/c the tranny was not made to hold that kinda of torque. I will hold for a little while till you can find a 4.0 tranny, but you'd better find one ASAP or you will have 4.0 swap, sitting in the garage b/c the tranny is shot!

Again, it'll work for a while, but it will burn up the clucthes. THESE TRANSMISSION WERE NOT MADE TO HANDLE THE TORQUE OF A 4.0!!!

Just got an '86 BII from my grandfather. So far no complaints, but I can't leave well enough alone and was considering a 4.0 swap. I found a '95 Explorer on craigslist for a donor, but I believe the tranny is a 4R55E. According to some information I found online, the A4LD and the 4R55E are essentially the same. Can they be interchanged? I ask because it would be easy to swap both the engine and tranny at the same time. Are they the same length? Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

I think the 1995 is the A4LD. Easy enough to check from the door code.

Insanely old post but what did you use for a donor vehicle? 25 years ago I did the swap on my 90 Bronco II and used a 90 Ranger (both automatic) and it was plug and play. Now I’m swapping an 89 Bronco II and want to use a 93 Explorer (both manual) but from what I hear it won’t be plug and play and others have said there are a bunch of wires to splice and re-pin.
