4x4 not working

4x4 not working
My 97 ford ranger isn't working wright when I put it in four-wheel drive. After I lock it in and put it in gear it doesn't work. It acts like it is slipping or not fully locking in. Does anyone know what this might be?

Take the cap off the end of the hub for your auto locking actuators,the old style had a big sring in them that held tention on the actuator so all you had to do was enguage from inside vechile, as the maual when you turned the switch on the hub to lock in the spring would push the actuator in a hold tention until unlocked. The newer ones have a funny looking spring in them, anyway if this spring is weak it has lost it's strength and is no longer holding the tention needed for 4x4. Check the spring it will be located just inside the cap that you pull off...Good Luck keep us posted as to what you come up with.
