I was hoping to get some help with a few problems I am having with my 1966 f-100, 352. It cuts out while driving sometimes, especially on acceleration, periodic backfiring in the exhaust, and it is becoming harder to start.....any ideas? Thanks
I would check your timing to make sure it's right. Make sure the vac advance is operating, check points to see if they're set correctly. You could have a bad accelerator pump diaphram that would cause a cut out or stumble on stepping on the gas. How long has it been since a general tune up? Sloppy timing chain is a remote possibility on the backfire. You'd notice that if you couldn't keep it in time.
The usual tune up. Should help a lot. Might pull the fuel canister on the pump. It cost about 5 bucks at napa. see if you prime it if it will start right up. Those fuel pumps start that right before they go out. they cost about 20 at autozone. get it there as it comes with the lifetime warranty and if your like me and keep the truck you'll learn to like autozone for that if not for any other reason.
Thanks. I will definately go the tune up route and if that doesn't work I'll check the fuel pump. Thanks for the tip on autozone - that's good to know.
Just a quick update, I am still working out the periodic stalling problem but I have seemed to solve the hard start. I am not 100% positive but it seems I wasn't using the choke properly. I went through the old posts and they recommended " if the engine is cold depress the accelerator to the floor, pull the choke all the way out and then release the pedal." Works like a charm. The truck starts the first crank. Thanks again for the help.
just a quick word about auto zone.i`ve owned many older vehicles over the years, and consequently i`ve also done a lot of repair work on my vehicles.i`ve had some really bad experiences at auto zone.they sale the cheapest parts in the industry, and give them a lifetime warranty.that`s alright,if you don`t mind changing the part out every 6 months or so.i just recently replaced the master cylinder on my 64.since it went out on a sunday,i had to get it from a.z.i painted the m.c,and the firewall where the paint had peeled from a previous leak.i put it on and it started leaking from behind immediately.it peeled away all the new paint and killed a whole day of hard work.i would rather pay a few dollars more for premium longer lasting parts from napa than to have to do it twice.just my 2 cents worth.i hope i haven`t offended anyone.
