I have a 91 aerostar 3.0 W/a4ld. got reverse and 1st gear.but it doesnt shift to 2nd till 40mph...installed a new servo ..pump .vacume modulator..valve body is clean..all internal parts look good..pump was replaced cause the pressure test was going from 200 to 0....i have a code that points to the 3/4 shift solonoid.i did not check the governor. The timing is good and the vacume lines should be good also...think hard on this 1....stumping the transmission guy too....
i am going to replace the lock and 3/4 shift solenoid to clear up the code error..while having the valve body off i did all the pressure test and i figure they all passed..i didnt hear a thud for the governor but fluid might have stopped that from happening and i just replaced the governor..also got a face full of fluid on the servo tests but after the fluid was gone they checked out ok....got my fingers crossed on the solenoids tomorrow...if you have any input on my problem..please post......
OK...hears the deal.....after thinking bout pulling the trans again..i started cleaning a second valve body i had from a trans from a junk yard....my thought were...pull the trans again ...check the convertor cause maybe the clutch was bad but then a thought popped into my head .....put the valve body in and see what happens...it is a easy thing to do compared to pulling the trans....WELL GUESS WHAT....it shifts fine.....remember..the valve body that was bad was the 1 that the transmission guy took apart and cleaned and said was all OK...and by the way....the GIANT spring that goes with the low reverse serve was missing..guess he forgot to put it back after doing the valve body....anybody can miss a spring that is as big as a coffee cup....Guess nobody here had any thoughts on this trans so i fixed it myself...i did get a idea from a guy on yahoo pool 1 nite...he thought it was the valve body ..which was my first thought..but finding a remanufactured valve body for a A4LD is hard to find. .....ALWAYS TRUST YOUR FIRST THOUGHTS.....GO FIGURE....................................
I'm gonna help my son rebuild his a4ld, non electronic. Is there a site you can recommend for general rebuild info on this tranny? I've worked with automatics before but older C-4 and C6 units.
if you know the basics on a trans....the book helps but there is ALOT of reading between the lines...I didnt think the book was worth the price but it did give me general knowledge...the guts inside a4ld isnt very difficult basically get your self a master rebuild kit and take a close look at all the parts and gears...might take a hr to do that...if you do the valve body..make sure no valves are difficult to pull out or put back in and check the springs......I thought it was a bit easier than my C6.
