I have been trying to find out how fast my truck SHOULD go. Right now my top speed is about 65 and the Engine is turning over at about 2800 RPM. I can push and get up to 75 but i start burning oil and the motor is turnign at about 3200 RPM. My truck is an 86 f250 2 door Ext. Cab W/ 4spd and 4:10 rearend. The motor is completly stock.
My question is How fast can you go and what are the specs for your truck for comparison.
I have a 94 F-250 2x4 ext cab long bed with idi turbo diesel. I don't know what the gear ratio is in the rear end though. The fastest ive ever gone is 85 at 2800rpm. My dad has gone 90 but i don't know what rpm probably 31or3200.
Currently I have LT235-85-16s on my truck. it just seems like the motor is turning over to fast for the speed I am going and only having 4 gears doesn't help. Is there any Good 5 speeds that are durable enough for the 6.9s?
Ford offered a ZF 5 overdrive behind the 6.9 in 87, and it was also in many years of the 7.3.
The final drive ratio is .76 overdrive on it.
It will bolt up to your transfer case if you have 4x4.
That would get you 82.8 MPH at 2800 with the 235-85-16 tires.
The ZF 5 is a good transmission.
It must be out of a diesel though (6.9 or 7.3), the gas version will not fit your engine.
The M6HD is a better transmission, but you also have to change the transfer case.
I can get to 110Km/H in ours, '88 F-350 2wd with 235/85/16s rear and 245/75/16s front, it only does 110 while right on the governor. It does 100 at around 3000 Rpm.
Several things you can do. One is change to 3.55's in the rear. Can do over a hundred but wont be able to pull as much. But if you never pull that's not a proble. Two you can change transmissions such as already suggested. The ZF5 is a good tranny. The six speed can be put in but I know it's not a bolt in installation like the zf5 is. Another option but kind of pricey is to put in an overdrive unit behind your existing trans. Such as a U.S. Gear or Gearvendor. I have 4.10's in my duelly and a 4spd but with the U.S. Gear I can do a hundred if I want to but still have the granny tree pulling gear that I use so much.
Thanks for the OD unit tip i'll check that out.
Was there a Borg Warner 5spd that was used in the ford trucks I remember my dad's old truck had a BW 5spd but it was a 4x4. My truck has the BW 4spd.
The GearVendor unit will cost around 2-3 grand, and the ZF5 spd will run around the same, even if you put it in yourself. Also, you'll have to shorten your rear driveshaft with the ZF5 spd, because the tranny will sit back farther.
Maybe 2-3k new or rebuilt. But you can find units from between 400-1000 if you look hard enough. The overdrive units are about 3k installed and new. But you can usually find them in junkyards or someone wants to get rid of theirs and they run 500-1500. I bought mine and installed it for less than $600
Well i guess i need to do some more digging to see what trannys are out there. I like the durability of the Borg Warner 4 spd but i don't have any high end and there is no chance I would ever go with an automatic. How good is the ZF5 and the ZF6? I want to compare my options before i go and do anything.
Thanks for the Info
Scott
I also like the BG T19 which is why I staid with it and put in an overdrive. The ZF5 is a good transmission. Just the only thing I don't like is the fact that it's aluminum. The ZF6 will not just bolt into place. It can be done and I think someone did it but I can't remember who it is. Also it wont give you anymore of an overdrive they just stick another gear in there so your gear ratios are much closer. But the final overdrive is the same as the 5spd. There was another guy over there that just put in I think a brownie overdrive and is very happy with it. I don't think he spent very much on it either.
