I am having to change the front brakes on my 03 Exp 4WD Eddie Bauer after only 24K miles. My problem is that I can't get the front rotors off and I'm frustrated. I've been working on cars for over 20 years and this has never happend.
I've removed the front caliper. Removed the front caliper brackets. It seems that the rotors should just come right off. There is some rust around the hub area where the rotor attaches to the hub, but I've sprayed the sh&* out of that area with WD40 to no avail. I've tried heating the the rotor up with a torch in the area of the hub to hopefully expand the rotor enough to break it free.
Please someone help me before I get my cutting torch out and cut the rotors off!
Have you tried prying the rotor from behind? I ask because with all these tight tolerances, it only takes a bit of corrosion to seat them on. Even using a penetrating fluid, you need to give it some assistance. Another bit of help, use a piece of wood and take a hammer and hit around the lug housing to loosen it. On 4x4's the rotor should just come off after caliper removal.
Some people end up destroying the rotor taking it off by beating it to death with a sledge hammer trying to get it off. Once you do remove the rotor, use some anti-sieze stuff to keep it from doing that again.
