Aerostar Trans Fluid ?

I have a '87 Aerostar XLT (3.0L v-6) and was wondering about changing the trans fluid and filter and using a brand name synthetic ATF. The transmission is working fine, but I know the early ones are prone to problems, which I am hoping to avoid with regular maintenance. Has anyone used a synthetic ATF in their Aerostar? If so, what brand, and comments pro or con you may have. Thank You! Ed...

Aerostar Trans Fluid ?

I try to change the ATF every 25000 miles or so. My wife's Aero is a 92. My mechanic said that in 92 Ford added a tranny cooler because they had had problems with the tranny. You may want to add a cooler to yours. As for using synthetic, it is supposed to handle heat better and give improved cooling. I don't know if it is recommended for your truck though.

I switched to Mobil 1 in my 95 Aerostar AWD and used it everywhere Mercon was specified (front axle, transfer case, tranny). No problems with the change to synthetics, shifting seemes a little crisper afterward. My thought is this: Because I do the work myself, I can use the better stuff and still do it for less than any automotive repair shop. I don't plan on extending the intervals for changing the fluid with synthetics but if I were using non-synthetics I would shorten the fluid changing intervals.

Ive got an 87 Aerostar that ive owned since 1990. it has almost 200,000 miles on it and hardly any problems.I installed a drain plug in the tranny pan and change it every time i change my oil.it keeps the the fluid clean and the tranny running strong

I change my 88 Aerostars and also my other cars auto trans fluid and filter at 30K intervals doing it myself. The drain plug is a good idea I considered but never got around to doing. Since the truck only just turned 60,000 miles,
maybe next time in say six or seven years.
I've never used synthetic oils since I only change motor oil and filters every 6 mo. or 4000 miles whichever comes first and the engine is just fine.
