when did ford stop using the 9'' rear end

1986 i think. the 8.8 came out in 1984 and that was the year ford started to phase out the 9. i know the 8.8 and the 9 were used side by side untill 1986 but ive also heard of some speacial orders getting the 9 all the way till 96

Was it to save money? It was so easy to work on.

My guess is the 8.8 is lighter and takes less power to spin. Which means 2/10s mile per gallon.

Probably had more to do with a change in axle supplier. Visteon Corporation, http://www.visteon.com/technology/au...xle_spec.shtml, supplies the 7.5", 8.8", 9.75", 10.25" and now the 10.50" axles to Ford.
