I recently traded in my 2000 V-10 for a 2000 PSD. After getting it home and snooping around and cleaning, I discovered the previous owner already installed a Superchip along with a KN air filter and 4" muffler and tailpipe. I am assuming there is a factory chip that was removed. My question is, Is there ever a need to have the original chip in place, and how would I go about getting one if I did? I've looked all through the thing hoping it was maybe in the glovebox. Also, is there a way I can find out what the specs are for the chip I have in it now? Its a big gold box with Superchips stamped into it.
Thanks, Dave
Your assumption that Ford uses a "stock" chip is incorrect. Ford doesn't use any chip. There would just be a black plastic cover with your computer code sticker on it in place of the chip you now see. If you bring the truck into Ford for repairs and the dealer sees the chip it is most likely they will void what is left of the warranty. If you bought the truck from a dealer then it is likely they have already voided the warranty. If your truck has the stock air box with the K&N filter in it I would highly recomend tossing the whole thing into the garbage. The stock air filter box and cover are a very poor design and they do not seal around the filter well at all and will allow dust to get around the filter and into your engine. (known as a dusted engine and yes this too will void the warranty) The Ford AIS severe duty air filter system is a good replacement as are several aftermarket ones.
If you bought this truck from a dealer and they didn't tell you it was chipped I'd take it back. Does it have EGT and/or boost gauges? if you bought a used truck that was chipped and they were not monitoring EGT's or boost you may have a lot of headaches ahead. At this point the factory warranty is over but if you bought an extended warranty that also could be an issue. Good luck...
How do you find out what computer code you have I have no sticker on the computer box itself?
it should also be on a sticker in the front of the drivers side door jam on the back of the front fender(where the door hinges are) toward the top, if its still there.

Nope no sticker were else can I look and I'm not afraid of getting my hands dirty.
the only other places i know of are on the plastic PCM cover and on a sticker on the PCM case it self, it has a bar code on it. it is a small white sticker with black writing.
On second thought, is there a way to find out what chip I currently have? Any kind of sticker or serial number on it? Whats the procedure for removal/installation of it to look?
