Rust on tailgate

I have a '63 f-100 LWB with a pretty nice tailgate except for the rust around the right hinge area. The tailgate is fully functional at this time, but progression of this rust will ruin the tailgate. Is there a way to slow down this process? Has anyone ever tried removing the atffected area and weld in a new piece of metal? Any help is greatly appreciated.

sounds like you already have the plan, remove the rust and patch the peice in. just be sure to paint it with something good, por 15, or something like that.
