That trick has been around for a long time, older than Smokey:

Well kids, don't try that at home.... you need to do some proper prep and use the right paint or you will be pulling that motor apart and finding all the paint chips and chunks in the oil drains and pump filter.....

I think GM engines should be pink. No, actually make that hot pink.

What about "Ford Red"; that maybe dates back to the '50s. I just bought a spray can today to do the 223 valve cover.

We painted the lifter valley on my Cleveland to help oil flow. The exterior of the engine is red though, to match the color of the truck. But it is a Ford red though.

I always paint my engines red, with contrasting black on the pulleys, valve covers if they're just stockers, oil pan, etc. And I still have a can of Glyptal red for the inside of the race engines. I have also, on one block, ground off all the rough casting and polished the whole inside of the block. That was a job! Painting is a lot easier. -TD

The engine I am building now is about to be completely de-burred inside and out, and painted. I'll probably use that glyptol stuff inside, but I am thinking of white for the outside.

I thought of doing one in white, along with a white engine compartment, but you better make sure that you have no oil leaks. If you do have one, you'll be able to spot it right away! The 302 I built for my Tiger, I went over the whole outside of the block with a disc grinder and smoothed it out, ground off the little casting bumps etc, and even ground off the oil filter mount. Then I drilled and tapped the oil passages and screwed in fittings to connect the oil lines for the remote filter/oil cooler directly into the block. Looks cool, and eliminates the spin-on adapter which gives me a little more clearance to the headers where it's really tight anyway. The old spin-on adapter had to be positioned just right so that the oil lines wouldn't touch the header tube, so I couldn't get the adapter tight enough and always had an oil leak there. Block looks like glass, it's so smooth and the red paint really looks good on there. I probably took five pounds off the block. -TD
