i have a 99 3.0l ranger with a mac air intake, the cone filter type, and i was wondering if it would be useful to run pvc pipe down to the lower part of the grill and up to were the new cone filter sits to try to get some cool fresh air in there?

The ford engineers spent years and millions of dollars getting it right and here we are messing with it in out backyards... Anything you do to your intake system including the cone filter you already have will be a BAD thing... Do you honestly believe that ford could not have put that cone filter on there? All it does is give dirtier air and loud sound... It does nothing good! Nor will any other change do good!

no need to hate.
it looks good, makes a cool sound when i get on the gas, and it filters just as good as my old filter. i also never have to replace the filter, and with regular maintance, it won't hurt a thing. i was just asking a simple question and you have to get all mad at me for some reason or another. i don't know what i did? hopefully someone can give me an answer to my question.
thanks,
paul

Ok P4 how often do you reoil that thing? I betcha that it starts allowing dirt to get thru it after only 100 miles or so. They were invented and intended for racecars. The engines in racecars are not expected to last 1 or 200,000 miles like out truck engines are. With the stock intake and fiter you will get all the cleanliness ford intended and all the air your engine can use in normal service. And no I don't use the word nor do I hate anything.

:sigh: i clean my filter and i just checked my oil after 1000+miles on the new filter and its clean. i live on a dusty lane and i've been offroading a couple times, my oil is clean. my filter is clean. i didn't start this thread to dicuss whether or not my filter cleans well enough or not. i started it to get an answer on the question that i posted.
i'll let you konw when my engine explodes to you can say 'i told you so.' until then, its staying on there 'cause i want it on there.

God I hope this guy doesn't get a Gov. job! there is to meany people like this in Gov already that pass laws.
As I see it, Big Jim is really just presenting his point of view on the subject, and although he might have come across rudely, I don't think he meant to personally offend anyone.
In addition, I'm sure captain p4 has heard enough opinions on the "oiled verses non-oiled" air filters and intake kits to a point where it simply annoys him to death. And I do see his question as being more concerned with "How do I " as opposed to "Should I, and I'm sure he was hoping to get feedback along those lines.
In any case, there is nothing to be gained by going back and forth over it.
Any extra air hitting the filter is good, but then you have to worry about water which is bad. I say if you do it, dont seal the PVC around the filter, that way if the PVC does go under water, the engine can still suck air from the engine compartment.
I have thought about doing it myself, just dont have any time right now with school, work and sleep.
BTW ford engineers desing for the average person. The average person doesnt mind sacrificing power for quietness. Quieter mufflers and intakes are more restrictive. There is room for improvement or the after market INDUSTRY wouldn't be in business. Last time i checked they were still making a few dollars. Just my 2 cents.
