OKAY - Thank you everyone for your advice - This is now what is going on - I did not agree with them changing the oil from Rotella 15W 40 to 10W 30 but they did it anyway (which I am not paying for) and said that changing the oil was there last option to try and figure it out, Well I was not in agreement with that and they now have set me up with a flight recorder to record what is happening in the truck when it engine power cuts out or stalls on me. SO low and behold - THE TRUCK HAS DONE IT 3 MORE TIMES since last eve (engine power loss - cut out)- NOW I now it is not an oil grade issue!!!! SO here I go again back to the dealership on Monday!! Yeah - so excited

I did ask about the people who are working on my truck and they are diesel mechanics/techs - whatever you call them - and Tony (service manager) was very proud of them.......

Curious... Some of these signs are from wire chaffing that some of the trucks experienced. What year is your truck, and have you ever had the wire chaffing and ground recal done???

Best of Luck,
Corey

So do you know by chance if they have done the ground and wire chaffing recall??? That's extremly paramount to proper function. This might help you with the dealer. This is an original ford broadcast message. It applies to ALL 2003,2004 6.0's. They changed the running of the harness for the 05's.

Wire Chafing Issues:
A variety of driveability issues can arise from chafing/shorting wiring, such as crank/no-start, stall, running rough, misfire, buck/jerk or lack of power. The most common location for this is the valve cover/cover bolts near the FICM or the intake manifold bolts where the harness routes under the air intake hose. The harness should be rerouted and any chafe points insulated with rubber vacuum caps. Other chafe problems can occur where the sensor harnesses route around the valve covers, thermostat housing, idler pulleys, glow plug relay bracket, and near the accelerator pedal assembly (adjustable pedals), and also near the PCM by the battery and near the relay box brackets at the left rear corner of the engine compartment. On Econolines, also inspect at the top edge of the computer, along the oil dipstick tube bracket and auxiliary A/C lines. Broadcast Messages 1407 and 3077.

Best of Luck,
Corey

RealMenPowerstroke! - I have an '04 PSD and do not want to have any "chaffing" issues. Do you and everyone else who reads this think it is a good idea or even possible to protect the sensitive wire locations?? if not all, which have been the most troublesome??

I am wiling to spend a whole saturday, putting insulation on to not have a single hour of down time, much less being stranded somewhere.

what are you feelings??

Trevor

Hey Bubba,

Well to answer your question, yes, there is several spots where it is the most common. If you plan on looming your wires my recommendation is to use something removable if necessary in case of service. Most looms you will find with withstand temperatures up to 1500 degrees. Our beloved 6-0hs seem to find a comfort spot about 1000 degrees of course depending on where you live, your driving habits, how much traffic etc... If you can find a loom that is made for extreme temps, say 2000 degrees, it will just be that one less chance of having melted plastic all over your engine. I might do the same now that you bring up that point. Looming the few areas shouldn't take more than an hour. The areas of importance are as follows...

1) The valve cover/cover bolts near the FICM or the intake manifold bolts where the harness routes under the air intake hose.
2) Where the sensor harnesses route around the valve covers, thermostat housing, idler pulleys, glow plug relay bracket, and near the accelerator pedal assembly (if you have adjustable pedals), and also near the PCM by the battery and near the relay box brackets at the left rear corner of the engine compartment.

I will look online tonight for some extreme high temp loom. Anyone who has any info regarding said loom would be of tremendous help if you could post where we could find some.

Best of Luck,
Corey

Corey, so it is more of a "heat melt" issue than a "rubbing" issue.?
I misunderstood the term chaffing to mean rubbing, kind o like my bottom on hot summer days!!?!?!!?

Hey Bubba,

No, the wire has the chafing issue. The loom you would be using to protect your wires against chaffing would have the melt consideration. Hope this makes sense, sorry for the confusion.

Best of Luck,
Corey

10-4!!!
I am a bit slow sometimes.....if the engine compartment gets that much proximity heat, the loom should be able to take it!

thanx

This sounds like a chafing issue. Had one two weeks ago with the same problems and found chafing at numerous places. And around here we only use 15w40. Sounds like they have someone inexperienced with 6.0L or a gas tech working on it. IMO

OK - Picked my baby up this morning after a week of not having it and it is running OK.....I asked them how confident they were is fixing the problem by replacing the wire harness - he said "fairly".....I asked if he could see anything wrong on the other wire harness and he said nope and that's what worries us. Well they wanted to take and run a few miles on it today to make sure it was going to run properly - I told them I needed the truck back and it didn't matter who was rackin' up the miles, if it is going to act up again it is and more than likely you (the dealership) would not be able to fix it anyway.....If it does act up again they can buy it back and I will get anohter one.......
