I live in North Pole alaska and I am having trouble starting my 1997 f350 power stroke. It has trouble at even 25 degrees above. I have replaced the relay switch and I am told that the glow plugs are probably at fault. I am wondering
if a hobby type mechanic like me can do it. Is there some kind of difficulty in removing the valve cover gasgets. I am told it will be 250 per side. What is the big deal about removing them to get to the glow plugs. I do not have air conditioning. Thanks for any information.

Castledrummer, if you go to THIS SITE you will find an excellent set of instructions for doing the job. I have them saved as an MS Word document along with a cut and paste of the thread I started when I did mine and some information about the glow plug relay. The job is not too bad - the toughest thing to do was get the bolt on the back of the passenger side valve cover off. If you would like a copy of the MS Word documents I have, check your eMail and reply to one I sent (or will send in a minute) with GLOW PLUG INFORMATION in the subject line. If you will then reply to my eMail I will send you the attachments.
I just had both of mine off and my hardest was the one in the bcak on the drivers side and the 2 next to the heater box on the passenger side. But all in all it wasn't that bad. Once you take the ducts off for the turbo you have alot of room to work with. Als I moved My a/c compressor to make it easier to remove the pass. side cover. Just loosen th ebelt and the four bolts. this is on a 2000 7.3 psd.
Anyone with instructions and pictures can do it. just do the hard side first (passenger) and tag the bolts and parts for re-assembly if you have to..also you can even take pictures before and during to look at as reference...go for it ...good luck, if you have any problems whatsoever don't hesitate to contact BELIEVER45 anytime day or night.................. Reason: misspelled
I had to pull the valve cover off the driver's side yesterday, replace a glow plug, and reassemble. The total time was 45 minutes. The bolt on the back of the valve cover is the only one that isn't downright easy. To get it off, I use a 10mm deep socket, a swivel adapter, and a long ratchet extension. Admittedly, it was tougher the first time I had to remove it, but like most things, has gotten easier with practice.
