I have a outer tire mount on my 95 but it seems to me the outer tail gate tire set up can damage the tail gate. I am restoring mine to pristine condition and want to go with the outer spare but my tail gate seemed to be damaged from the weight of the tire just some light denting around where it mounts.
Is it my imagination or is this a problem THANKS? i really want to keep it outside for the look I want but once i fix the gate I do not want damage to reocurr!
The external carrier, if slammed or misaligned can dent the gate. Yours truly backed into a fencepost at the dragstrip a month ago and pressed the tire, carrier and all into the gate and made a mess of the gate. Make certain, if you put it back on after restoring, that you check the alignment between the latch bracket and the catch on the carrier so that it doesn't require any major slamming to get it to latch. Keep the latch lubed too...I use a combination of white lithium grease and graphite powder...then even when the white lithium dries out the graphite is still working. The other tailgate issue that occurs if the carrier is slammed and banged around is the outer sheet metal skin begins to seperate from the side of the gate near the top right corner of the gate in the curve up to the weatherstrip for the rear window. This is not to discourage the use of the external carrier, just a caution to make certain everything lines up and works smoothly when you mount it to a new tailgate.
I can't believe no one mentioned the "Bronco badge of honor", the nice little indent to the right of the lower tire bracket from swinging the tire rack open, it quite the nice crease in the rear fender You might want to consider mounting the spare inside if you worrying about dents and creases.

Hey Greystreak, I backed into a brand new duramax with my Bronco while backing out my driveway, caused $4k worth of damage to his passenger side fender and tail light, put a nice indent in my tail gate, So I can feel you pain, I think it was a G note to have the tail gate repaired
I thought about mentioning "The Dent". But I usually post way too much when I respond to these things anyway. Sorry to hear about yours...looks like mine will be just under that as well after I repaint and rhino-line the new tailgate.
By the way, I have an extra external carrier and latch that I can part with if anyone is in need of one. You would need to have a Bronco that is equipped to accept this accessory with the mounting brakcets in the rear quarter. Can't get to those anymore. Greystreak's burnt shell is finally gone.

I have a 38 inch super swamper on my tailgate. I have no dents but, the thing rattles like crazy. Anything I can do to stabilize it? I know its near impossible to have a smoothe ride with a big rig but maybe it could atleast stop rattling. LMK. Thanks.
How do you see out the rear view mirror?
One of the things I did to help with the rattle actually served to improve the rear view problem too. I took the actual wheel mounting flange off the carrier (four bolts) and inverted it. This lowers the mounting position and clears the tire away from a little of the rear window area. It also lowers the tire's center of gravity on the carrier and helps keep it from bouncing around. Make sure the latch and bushings are in good shape too. If the round rubber bushing is missing on the latch, even a stock size spare will rattle around back there. The holes may not align perfectly when you flip it which will require that you enlarge one of them so that the bolt will still slip through.
I did much the same thing when I was running the exterior spare, but I just used a piece of 1/4" aluminum plate to move the spare down and to the right. Made it a lot easier to see out the rear, and seem to control the vibration, etc, a lot better. The body was already cracked just below the right taillight from the weight of the spare the guy before me had on there. I've since swtiched to an inside spare, and like it better.
Hey, I am starting to worry a bit about this spare tire. It is in my way to see and when I drive bumpy road I fear the whole back is just going to fall off as much as it rattles. I like the off road look with it on, but this rattling need to stop. Is there a more stable outside tire mount that can handle this huge 38 inch swamper? Or is an isnide tire mount the way to go? Or sinc I dont do highway driving just no spare at all? I'd really like to keep it outside if possible. LMK. Thank.
You can always put it on the roof. There is the possibility of going to a bumpre mounted carrier either custom or aftermarket. Not sure if there is one being made for the Bronco but the bumper is tied directly to the frame and should afford major improvements in stability especially for that size tire.

Anyone know whre I can get a bumper mount one? Would it still swing open? I like the idea, plus I'd be able to see better. If anyone nkows where I cna get one for a 1990 Bronco LMK. Thanks.
Usually those stock tire carriers dont hold up with anything bigger than a 35 inch tire definitely look for a rear bumper/tire carrier. Make sure its bumper that you can pull off of/tow with if ur gonna spend the money. I had a 90 Bronco but I havent looked for a tire carrier in a while, I will let you know if I find the few companies/people that make them. Alex
