the e4od is totally electronic it might have a bad fuse or bad circuit in it. take to a trans shop and tell them to scan it most places will do it for free
i have a e4od in my truck also it is something in the severo pack. i am looking for a 5 speed manual to put in my truck and get rid of the auto trans. i had to have it rebuild twice in the last 2 years.
it depends if you by everything seperate it will cost more than if you find a truck with the trans your looking for. like me i'm looking for a ex-cab lwb 1989-1998 f250-f350-f450 with a 5 speed zf trans to fit a 460, it is quite commion but can't find one that they want to get ride of. that way i'll have every thing i will need. stering column, pedals, clutch resiovr, slave cylinder, trans, flywheel, clutch, starter, drive shaft, and cross member. it all depends how bad you want to do it, and how much you want to spend.
I want to know what is making the klunk. why only once in a while, why only into 2nd gear, is anyone else having this problum??????the point of this is its not the trans, its electronic somewhere, i m looking to find that, running out & replacing the trans is NOT THE ANSWER, if a few more ppl would dig into these things and find the prob then these tranmissions would be 1/2 the price. people STOP REPLACING AND START FIXING!!
I feel your pain bro. I have a 95 F150 with the E4OD and I have been hitting the same brick walls. I have read post on 3 or 4 different forums and there are at least 3 or 4 people who have posted about the same problem. There are a few that even said a complete rebuild did nothing to fix the problem. I have read threads where people have just changed the fluid and it fixed the prob and I have read threads where people changed their fluid a few times and still klunk. My best lead so far comes down to the vehicle speed signal. On my truck the speedometer seems to jump around a lot when I get up to about 30mph or more. Another qwirk about the whole thing is that whenever I check the Diagnostic Trouble Codes I get a 628 which is excessive Torque Converter slippage. Once I clear this code I can drive intown for days without a problem. once I get up and cruise above about 50 or so (when the T/C should be loking up) though it will go into Klunk mode again until I clear the codes. I replaced the speed sensor in the rear Diff, but that didn't help the prob any. I also read an article where the toothed ring that the speed sensor gets its signal from can somehow go bad and need to be replaced. I am planning on draining my diff this weekend and taking a look at the teeth to see if I see anything out of the ordinary. Hopefully this gives you a place to start, but if not, hopefully someone will see this and help me out with any info they may have on this particular problem.
i m getting the same thing on the truck when the codes are reset. there is a sensor in the bell housing (of course I cant remeber the name) but that is aparently known to go bad on these.(E4OD transmission) I know what you mean if you get the codes reset it will be fine till you hit your OD gear then it starts!!
I think this might be the prob is this damn sensor. On any note if your truck has anywhere near 120000 miles on it DO NOT I REPEAT DO NOT CHANGE THE FLUID!
I have talked to many mechanic ppl i know and trust and they say Do NOT. You may not know me and may not trust me but, if you do this you might as well order a trans at the same time. I suggest getting the filter changed. i did that and they found 2 bolts in the pan from the valvebody. they put then back in and it drove with no klunk for a while, but it came back
I don't remember seeing a semsor in the Bell housing. If you can find out what sensor that is please let me know. It would make sense to have a sensor measuring the torque converter speed and checing it with the vehice speed to determine the amount of slip, but then again the T/C should be spinning the same RPM as the engine so they should be able to use the Tach signal to determine the amount of slip. Also If you could elaborate on the not changing fluid comment and the reasoning behind it. Why wouldn't you change the fluid after you change the filter?
Mine will klunk going into all the gears sometimes and sometimes it shifts fine. It shifts great when the road is wet and its raining. I wonder if its a grounding problem.
I have a 96 F-250 diesel that randomly will shift very harshly into 2nd gear. (E4OD) Its been doing this for quite some time now. I suspect a broken accumulator spring or sticking valve, but being an electronicly controlled transmission it could be commanding too much line pressure for the conditions. Just in the last couple days it has slipped on me with my camper on, so I may be tearing into it soon.
the fluid in a trans gets a sut in it after some miles that the filter dosent catch. the transmission get used to running with this sut in it after like 80,000 miles and you take that away and it wont no how to respond. It will go sooner than if you just left it alone
The fillter one the other hand will help keep your fluid cleaner. Plus you exchange under half of your fluid when you change filter. so new fluid with old fluid make a diffrence
