I have read various articles about diesel fuel. One article stated that if you leave the fuel in your tank for too long it is more prone to contamination and algae build up, etc. My question would be is there a reasonably priced fuel additive that is safe for the truck and that limits this contamination? By the way my fuel stays in my truck for roughly 5-6 weeks due to the fact that I don’t drive it everyday.
I have experienced the results of algae in my fuel in my '85 Ford diesel truck, and it is no fun. I was told that this is a common problem in diesel boats, and any marine store should have a algaecide additive that will prevent the buildup of algae in the fuel. I obtained mine from a marine store, and had no further problems with the truck. I can't recall the manufacturer, but maybe a Google search will get you some info. Good Luck.
I run the Power Service (silver bottle) 32 oz treats up to 100 gallons for $4.99 at Checker Auto (same as Schucks & Kragen) or $.05-.10 per gallon. I buy my fuel at a high volume dealer for typically $.08 cheaper than everyone else. So I use treated fuel for the same price most others pay for the older/stale fuel. My truck puts out very little black smoke, even under hard acceleration- Just ask my Dodge buddy...He has seen the back of my truck!
