Honestly, how bad is it for a diesel to be run for short distances with proper warm up time and cool down time? I have heard so many different views on this subject I really cant even make sense of all them. Anyways I was basically wondering if starting up my truck and letting it idle for around 2-5 mins then driving to the store which is about 10-12 mins and then cutting off the truck is bad for the engine? Also is a cool down period needed (as in a period were you let the truck idle back down for 2-5 mins) before shutting the engine off?
You've got one thing right....
hundred of opinions on this...
I don't have an opinion either way...
just my 33K+ experience of MOSTLY short trips...
I work from home so I don't have the daily commute miles...
we just run around town in the X all the time after work...
and so 33K in 18 months is a lot of short trips
and personally, I drive mine almost like a gasser....
just a little easier in the colder mornings more because it's so loud when first "woken up" cold than anything else
some may get on here about the theory of
wet stacking,
proper condensation allowances,
this and that,
forumli out the wazzo(sic)....
heck, I just drive mine and enjoy it...
it's a TRUCK ! if it breaks - I get another one !!!
Not that I don't take care of my truck - but I chose to worry about other things...
like terrorists(criminal idiots), elections(more idiots ), my family...
3....
Don't worry about it.
You should let any engine warm up before you drive it but most of us never do.
You should let the engine idle to cool down the turbo if you pull off the highway but again, most of us never do.
and that's another bad habit I have...
if I don't use the remote start,
I stuff the key in and turn to start ...
and it cranks within 2 or 3 rpms it seems... at least as quick as my lincoln ls
