Question extended warranty

New to forum. Just drove home first diesel, switched from gas for mileage & power. Will use the truck for medium duty service truck with a Rawson tool bed. No towing. Extended warranty on vehicle is around $2k. My only concern is the transmission. Have always had standard in past due to auto transmission problems w'80 F250. Do you think very good maintenance will make it last 100k & beyond? I am not big on extended warranties but would appreciate anyone's imput here. I have to decide tomorrow b4 noon. Seems to be a great place for good info!

Why do you have to decide before noon tomorrow??

This'll probably be a 'debatable' topic, Pro and Con, but IMO I would take the bet that if cared for, with no extreme/severe towing it should be problem free to at least 100k.. Especially if you have no issues to the first 3/36.. Guaranteed..NO.. But these transmissions are far better than their predecessor the E4OD/4R100.. I would guess that more members/owners don't have extended warranties, than do.. A personal choice/decision for sure, but most people don't get the chance to take 'advantage' of a extended warranty.. And, an extended warranty can be purchased at a later date.. Just my opinion..

Congrats on your new rig, and welcome to FTE

If your dealer is telling you that you need to make a decision by today at noon or the extended warranty won't be available, they are telling you a lie. I got an extended warranty for compensation when I complained about the problems with the October 03 flash. I bought the truck in August.

Is there another dealer near by?

tiny, I agree with Haya. I didn't bother with the extended warranty. I had a '97 PSD with the E4OD tranny. I sold it at 150K miles and it was going STRONG!!! No issues with that tranny. I just bought an '04 PSD with the Torqueshift Tranny. This one is a better design with a good reputation. I LOVE this tranny setup. There are NO promises when it comes to mechanical devices, but I took the gamble on not getting the Warranty.
On a side note, you can always get the extended warranty at the end of your 3/36. You'll just pay a little more for it and have a higher deductible. If you're starting to have tranny issues then, just buy that one.
Good luck. Rob

And DO shop around on the internet....
There's a BIG discrepancy between real cost and sales price (just like MSRP and sales price of your truck) there is a LOT of money to be saved if you want the piece of mind...

I didn't know about the 5 speed Torqueshift when I got my X 33k+ miles ago, but I have not had a hiccup out of the tranny (or any other part of the X for that matter!)

But for my piece of mind I did buy the 100k extended warranty....
gives me a loaner every service trip and was just one thing I didn't want to haggle over....

If you do get one, do get only a Ford one.... (doesn't mean just buy it from a ford dealer.... they sell third party ones too.... I had them change mine from the third party to the ford one when I signed because they tried to sneak the 3rd party in...)

Yes tiny...welcome to the site ...Tim is always excited to see another Texican on board. He has such a special affliction...I mean...affection for us Texicans.

What part of our Great & Glorious State are you in?

Unless Ford has stopped the practice you can purchase the Ford ESP plan right up to 36,000 miles / 3 years.

I recently heard though that they have stopped letting the dealers sell the ESP after the point of sale. Purchase has to be direct from Ford after the purchase window is closed. If this is true that is why they told you noon. No sale now...no $$$ for the dealership / finance manager.

Ever seen a dealership finance manager without a lot of jewlery and / or fancy ink pens?

Talking texican

Kw thanks for your welcome. I see that you are one of the elders in the 6.0 church & have a couple of questions for you. I live in the Dallas area & really don't know the frequented diesel fill-up stations. If you are in my area I live in Dallas towards the Garland line. Also do you think the frame is the same on the 2004 as the '95? I was debating wether to use myold Rawson bed & get it repainted or get a new one. Thanks in advance!

Well tiny...seems we are neighbors. I live in Rowlett and Choctaw Bob lives near Namman High School.

I purchase a lot of my fuel @ Walmart on HyWy 66 in Rowlett. Their price is usually a little less than the avg brand station and they do a very high volume. Sometimes I have to wait to get to the diesel pump.

In addition, I use fuel additive (Power Service - Gray bottle) so I relieve some of my bad fuel concerns.

In regards to the frame...IMO I doubt that your '04 frame design will match up to the '95.

Do all Walmarts sell deisel? There is a Total @ NW & IH 30 where my employee used to buy his gas. do you think there is any difference between brands? I do know that gasoline is all from the same refineries & different brands have different additives. I would guess diesel is the same. My truck is for business but will drive it everyday , have small HVAC company. Love it so far. Do you know of an outlet to sell the bed as I will be adding a Rawson utility bed next week. The local Fontaine gives a 300 credit on the bed. I would think a brand new one would be worth quite a bit more than that. What color & model is your truck, I find myself looking for PSD now! I will keep an eye out for you.

tiny...place your cursor over the word "signature" upper right hand corner of this post for a description of my Shadow Gray Beast.

No all Walmarts do not sell diesel or gas. Plus, if they sell gas it does not mean that they sell diesel. Just have to start looking out for your diesel access and watch out for pricing. In Rowlett alone the other day I saw a price variance of $ 0.15 / gal from one station to the next.

In regards to your bed...the tailgate alone is worth more than $ 300.00. What is the color?

bed is white which I would think would be in demand more than others. It's funny, if ford does a bed delete on the sticker it lowers the price by $695.
