Hey folks, you've always been a wealth of info before so I'm hoping that hasn't changed. A scan through the first 5 pages of my search on "Steps" returned zilch, I hope this isn't a repeat.
I'm looking to put a set of steps on. Don't want/can't afford full bars, gotta stay under $125/set. It's looking, online at least, like alot of these sets bolt/screw only to the panels, not to the frame. I go in at over 250 lbs. so I don't know that I trust that long term. Anyone know of sets that actually mount all the way back to the frame?
OK so the more I look the more I realize that everything is body mount out there with the exception of a couple brands.
Am I being overly paranoid? Are the body panels plety sturdy to give me good service if I just bolt a set of steps on?
Also, there is one step from Bully that has a body AND frame mount but I saw something that suggests maybe I don't want to fasten frame and body together this way. Ideas on that?
Mounting to the body AND frame kinda defeats the purpose of your body mount bushings. The idea being the bushings give some cushion between the frame and suspension and the body. Its a ride & comfort thing really.
Have you looked at Hoops steps by Carr? Thats what I was looking at maybe getting for mine. I think the 10 inch ones were like $70 for the pair.
Does anybody have these? what do you think about them? I really dont need the step ( 6'5'' ) but they would be a beneficial for my girlfriend.
Looked at them but like most they only fasten to the rocker panels. With me weighing over 250 I worry that these might fatigue pretty quick. Price is sure right though.
Take a look at the one's on my 89 in my gallery. They were bent up from some 1/4" aluminum plate, and I bolted a piece of stainless diamond plate to the step surface. They bolt to the body flange a few inches back in from the rocker panel. I've had absolutely no problem with them (and I weigh in at about 275) for the last 4 years, and best of all they ran about 35 bucks to make. If you like, I can do some detail shots and send them to you.
Thanks for all the input guys. I think I'm leaning towards the Lund Supersteps but I'm gonna have a closer look at that body flange and see if maybe to Carr hoops are something I could be comfortable with.
The ones on Jbronco's look real good but without a name I can't find them. Oh well.
these are a little out of your initial price range, but they are good. they are custom made sliders that double as steps. mount to the frame. http://members.***.net/rockbronco/

I will see if I can find a name on them tomorrow. They are very sturdy and I would trust them with 250 lbs. They originally came with a non-skid surface, like on a skateboard, which has come off. I need to get some of that stuff and re-apply it.
MSUFOREMAN...I like your setup...do you have plans for those so I could weld my own. If not, has anybody seen plans for slider/steps that look easy to build. I ditched my running boards about a year ago. I like not having them there, but my friends complain about not being able to get in easily. At 6'3" so it's not an issue for me, but I like the dual purpose steps idea. Thanks guys!
