Question 1988 F 250

I have a 1988 F250 that I bought in March 2004, my brother owned before me. He took it to Wyoming Last summer and had problems with the engine shutting down at around 60-65 MPH he changed the high pressure fuel pump and the computer module. Same thing kept happening when I bought from him. So I took it to a Ford dealer here, they changed the distributer stator & TFI module. It ran great untill yesterday, it took me 40 minutes to get home from work the same thing kept happening I was driving and it just stopped running, pull over and wait a couple of minutes and it would start again go another 1/4 mile or so and the same thing. Any ideas?

Thanks,

Burt

First test the voltage to the TFI using a voltmeter pins 1&2 are run and 3 is start. Should be 90% of battery voltage. Test the coil resistance. Primary (low voltage) .3-1.0 ohms and secondary (high voltage) 8000-11500 ohms. You also need to check the low presure fuel pump. I had a Bronco II that did the exact same thing when the engine got warm in hot weather and stalled just like you discribe. I did everythng you did then said the heck with it and dropped the tank and found the wire to the fuel pump had been cut and shortened and the splice had broken. Repaired the wire, replaced the pump and suction strainer with tthe sender and it ran from then till the trans let go for the second time.

If you can test your fuel pressure especially when driving it should be 13-17 psi.

EFI fuel pressure should be around 35 psi for V8's and higher, around 55 psi for the 300 six cylinder.

My book calls for 13-17 but it wouldn't be the first mistake Chiltons has made.

Guess what? Where the fuel filter mounts to the frame rail VIA a hose clamp that is supposed to keep it horizontal, the clamp was loose causing it to tilt down towards the front of the truck thereby pinching the rubber supply hose at it's 90 degree angle as it heads up towards the engine. Reposistioned Filter tightened the clamp and what do you know.
Problem solved.(So Far)

Thanks for the help.
