Dumb 1st oil change question?

Ready for first oil change. Have read lots of posts, my question is:
Do I have to buy a 36mm socket or can I use the conventional band-type wrench used on canister type filters? Also, I don't have a torque wrench and don't want to buy one unless necessary, is there a way to hand tighten ( the old twist until snug then 1/4 turn etc?

Hope these queries aren't ridiculed too bad, just trying to save money.

Thanks a bunch

Wish I could help....
but I'm the "effecient with my time" (lazy) type that likes to pay someone else to do the sweaty work

but you'll get a lot of help from those that sweat

Yes, the 6.0 gods will banish you to gasser land throughout eternity if you do not buy a $ 10.00 36mm socket. Especially after spending your kids future college education on this single, lone transportation unit. BTW: If the socket had been financed with your truck your payment would have increased approx. $ 0.16 per month over 60 months.

OK...got the ridicule out of the way. Buy the socket. The potential damage you could do (let alone aggravation) makes it worth the $$$ as the filter housing is make out of plastic.

In addition, only refill oil with approx. 13.5 quarts or no more than to center of hatch marks on dip stick. Hey...this way you will save a couple of $$$ on oil, too.

Good luck.

And forget the torque wrench. The seal is made with a rubber o-ring, not the tightness of the cap. I'd be afraid of my featherweight torque wrench clicking off early at the spec'd torque just because the o-ring was dragging a bit or something anyway. Spin it down until the cap rim *just* contacts the metal housing, then stop. You're done. Any more and you'll crack the cap. Any less and you'll risk leaks if it backs off (though to be honest you could probably be a complete turn or two up and it would never back off due to the grip of the o-ring...)

36mm socket was only $6.00 at Sears.

I'd pick up a cheap (inexpensive) socket.. A band clamp will work, but they tend to 'squeeze' the plastic and could damage it.. The cap/s will pull tight 'almost' as soon as they close the gap.. 'Snug' is good, and no more.. Remember who'll be taking it off next time!! And remember to get yourself an oil pan that'll hold a good amount of waste oil.. MORE that 14qts!!

When you change your oil and filter on that 6.0l, Change the oil filter first, because when you remove the filter it allows the oil from the filter housing to drain to pan. Good luck and enjoy

If you are on a tight budget, the 1/2 in drive fits in the top of the oil filter cap and will work. In fact it is mentioned in Fords lit on the subject. Frobozz is right on the tightness just make it "snug" and check for leaks when you fire it up.

This is good stuff! My first diesel should be in in the next couple weeks. I love hearing all of the various inputs on different aspects of simple processes such as oil changes. This is very helpful to us newbies!!! Keep the tech tips flowing, and thanks!!!
