Speed Sensor in rear end????

Howdy, I just finished doing a Solid Axle Swap on my 1998 Dodge Durango. On the rear I used a 1978 Ford 9", and overlooked the need for a rear speed sensor. After researching etc. Someone came up with the answer being the fact that it will read the Ring Gear. This source also told me that Dynatrac said so themselves and sposidly makes diff caps etc. which hold the Sensor over the ring gear. So I drilled a hole into the axle housing which was directly over the Ring gear. From the first time I started the truck the ABS/Brake light was on symbolizing the speed sensor was not reading, of course this could be from a bad sensor, but for hopes-sake I was hoping to get some other options in case this does not solve it. I keep thinking to myself that someone out there has had to come up with a logical way of dealing with this. I've pondered a few ideas, but Im also no expert on things like this Anyone heard or have any ideas?

I don`t know anything about the sensors on the ring gears so here are a few thoughts. I`ve read about exciter rings on the ring gears of ABS vehicles. Does it read the ring gear or does it have to have some sort of exciter mounted on the ring gear or carrier that triggers the sensor when it goes by? If you have an exciter of some sort, is the sensor close enough to it to complete the circuit (trigger it) as it travels past? Just a few ideas as I know nothing about ABS.

No it was placed around an 1/8 of an inch away from the ring gear and I was hoping it would read off of that, nobody had mentioned anything about an "exciter" ring. What I want to know is why couldnt I tie the wires in with the trans speed sensor in favor of the rear speed sensor getting the same impulse signal? given I'd have to calibrate the ***** out of it but as of now thats the least of my concerns.

The speed sensor does get it's signal from an exciter ring that is mounted to the ring gead in the rear end. The Exciter ring usually has like 100+ teeth on it. You will probably have to look around for a kit for the 9" rear to mount an exciter ring in it.

Oh you mean the reluctor ring, I gotcha, Its hit or miss with these ideas on the speed sensor, if I cant figure anything out I'll just throw a detroit locker in there (they have pre-machined lips to hold reluctor rings) and go from there. I was just wondering if anyone has found any tricks or leapholes for this.

Reluctor ring, exciter ring, toner ring, sensor ring... A ring by any other name would be just as much a pain in the butt. I like your Locker idea. You could kill two birds with one stone.
