Question tranny or torque converter

I have '94 f 150 flareside 5.0/E40D 103,000. miles. I was pulling away from a stop sign under light accelleration and the tranny seemed to slip then shifted very hard and I think the wheels locked up for a second. That was two weeks ago. Yesterday basically the same thing happened again. There seemed to be no problems between occurances. The fluid is clear red and does'nt smell burnt. Any ideas of what is going wrong?

I feel your pain...

I have the same truck w/117k mi. and experiencing the same problem. I would also like to know what the culprit is and what the most economical method to diagnose and fix it is. Sometimes mine will shift really hard at 70-75 as well and will bark the tires going down the highway. It feels like it is trying to downshift into passing gear going uphill, finally throws it in (jerk and bark) and then goes back to the original gear. It will do the same thing occasionally at 25-30 mph or at other random times.

It feels like something will break and besides that, it is embarrasing!

Thanks and God bless!

Getting tested...

I took my truck in to a mechanic friend of mine and he is going to hook up a tester to look for codes or something to indicate where the problem is. He says that these tests are pretty thorough, and hopefully they can identify the problem.

Any thoughts on these testers' ability to diagnose tranny/ converter problems?

Thanks and God Bless!

my mechanicc said that nothing showed up on his tester but that he and Blumenthal's thought that it very well might be the solenoid pack. So he is going to change it out and see if it fixes the problem. I hope it does, because things just get more expensive from here!

I hope that works. It sounds simple enough. I wonder what that entails and how much it costs. Mine problem has only happened twice about 300 miles between instances. How prevalent is your problem. Also mine only happened at low speed under light acceleration. lol

Mick66 this is strikergc I posted about my '94 flareside tranny problem. I also made the last post in response to you taking yours to change the solenoid pack. Well as you can see I'm logged in under my son's name now (zman764). Not sure why I'm not very proficient at this. Just wanted to clear up any confusion. lol

He said that it should cost $180 plus labor and fluid to buy and ship the solenoid block.

He said that the fact that it was an intermittent problem led him to believe that it was electrical. It only happened after I had been driving for at least 10-15 minutes and at random times. Sometimes it would not act up for a while, but sometimes it would act up for 10-20 minutes at a time.

My mechanic should be done sometime today or tomorrow and I will let you know if I can tell if it does any good. I have a long trip Saturday and will know for sure by then.

Well, with labor and the solenoids and all, it cost $300. And I am sorry to say that it did not fix the problem. I guess I am going to have a $50-100 test ran on at a large transmission shop to try to diagnose the problem. I hate to replace the tranny, but I know many people spend the price of a new one in trying to diagnose and fix the old one!! I am at a loss, but I cannot sell the truck and pass the problem on to someone else, and I am sure that I am not the first person who has got the sour end of a used truck deal.

Any thoughts on further diagnosis or replacement?

I had a similar problem with my '97 f150. Replaced the solenoid, and it seemed to fix it for a short time. Now, it's back to its old tricks. Dropping it off at the shop again today to see if they can find out anything new. Someone suggested to me that when the solenoid was going out, it may have damaged the front pump (in which case this will get expensive). If I find out anything earth shattering, I'll let you know. Otherwise, good luck! Those E4OD's are not cheap.

Well, the solenoids did not fix it, and I tookit into a major transmission shop with a pretty in-depth scanner. They said that if it was not mechanical it should show up on the scanner, and nothing did. A rebuit tranny from them costs $1250 w/ 12k/1 yr warranty, so that is the route that I am going. I have a friend that has spent $2000 trying to quick fix his tranny and it still is not fixed. So I will just thank the Lord that I have the means to replace it and will nip it in the bud right now !

In His Grip,

Mick
