Supercrew engine & axle combinations

Well, after a long search I'm pretty much narrowed down to buying a used Supercrew. It will probably be 4wd and I'll use it to tow up to 4,000 lb at the very most (my current max. is 3,000 lb. and it may not get bigger). I have three questions regarding axle ratios & engine choice:

1. What axle ratios are available with the 4.6 or 5.4 engines?
2. What are the axle codes for these?
3. What would you recommend for towing up to 4,000 lb (and a decent load of pssgrs and gear) over sometimes moutainous terrain? I'm willing to sacrifice a bit of performance for better fuel economy but I don't want a slug (need to maintain 60 mph up hills in drive without flooring it).

Thanks,
Biederboat

This will help you with the axel codes.

The Specs link on the right will be helpful for the other info that you are looking for.

Any engine/rearend combo will work for the type of load that you are looking at hauling.

The 4.6L is a nice motor, but it is kinda sluggish in the SuperCrew and sometimes has the smaller 8.8'' rear vs the 9.75'' rear that is standard on the 5.4L. Throw in 4x4 and a boat and passengers and the 4.6L will git the job done, but you wont win any races with it.

I personally like the 5.4L motor, plenty of power and not that shabby of mpg for a 5300lb vehicle, if I keep my foot out of the engine compartment, I can get on average 17-19 mpg.

When towing my boat, I average around 13 mpg. I have 3.55 gears, and I can pick up speed up a 8% grade towing my ~3500lb bass boat...but I have my foot into it pretty heavily.
