Have you ever seen an exhaust brake on a gas engine? They are not used, because closing the throttle blade(s) serves basically the same purpose (restricting infinite airflow through the engine)
You could put one on and when you closed and then reopened it there would be a huge back fire and it might even pop thrue the carb or TB. It's a Diesel engine thing only.

Not really true. An exhaust brake works by increasing exhaust back pressure not by cutting intake airflow.

I know, I was simplifying things just a bit....
And gatesj, an exhaust brake isn't the same as a jake brake.
Jake brake - opens exhaust valves at the TDC on compressoin stroke - usually used on med and heavy duty diesels
Exhaust brake - butterfly valve in the exhaust system - usually used on lighter duty apps

You're right. I was thinking he was talking about a jake brake and I was trying to figure out how he was going to get the valves open on compression....
I would have to wonder if trying to fabricate some sort of homemade exhaust brake wouldn't blow manifold gaskets? How much pressure would build up?
Oh, Jebus! Talk about a Rube Goldberg mechanism! It'll be spitting and pooting back up thru the intake like a flat lobe on the cam! Probably FUBAR the carb-a-tooter too! It'll make for some interesting horse-chestnut-in-the-microwave popping noises under the air cleaner lid, however you slice it! Maybe upgrading the brakes on the vehicle might be a better solution!
