I asked about this myself some time ago, and only found that bedrugs, or the spray in liners are our options. I heard of some adapting liners for later years to fit into ours....
Do you know why a modern bed liner would not work? How different can a pickup bed be? I would think that only the wheel wells could be different. I guess i wil have to use the original bed liner in the mean time, a 4x8 sheet of plywood!
Wheel wells are the main difference. If you have the factory aux. tank, forget it. I've seen two pickups with a bed liner in them. First one was for sale and I never asked the owner how he got it to fit but you could tell it was from another truck. Second one was parked at Kragen and it looked like a perfect fit, it was made by "Star". If you want to try a later bed liner check out the ones for a mid-'80s Dodge 8ft. bed, they are close.
I'd highly recomend a spray-in liner if it's in your budget. I put a Rhino Liner in my two previous trucks and think it was the best investment I made to them. It'll never collect water and rust under there, stuff doesn't slide around like they do with those plastic shell liners, it instantly "cleans up" the appearance of an old battered bed, and mine has been impervious to damage, even the large boulders and safe I dropped in there. Even if you did happen to damage it the shops usually offer a lifetime warranty and can immediately spray the torn or chipped area. At least they do where I live. To me it was well worth the $$$$$.
[QUOTE=JakeisK98]I'd highly recomend a spray-in liner if it's in your budget. How much does it cost? I see a lot of do it yourself kits. Can you spray/brush it on over surface rust? I want a slippery surface of those plastic liners! Easier to get mulch and manure out of the bed. I dont see that spray on stuff being good when you ar taking a shovel to it.
I think I paid around $450 to get an 8 foot bed lined. Never tried the do it yourself stuff. I don't think spraying it over minor surface rust would be a problem. I wouldn't spray it over serious cancer thinking it's gonna patch the hole or anything. The bed I had done was pretty dinged up and I never had a problem with the bed deteriorating underneath. I've moved literally tons of dirt and bark, dropped boulders in there, slid a thousand pound safe across the surface, and never damaged it a bit. I don't think you're gonna hurt it with a shovel. I think you'll find that the Line-X product has a more slick surface than the Rhino liner. I just don't like my tools, boxes, and equipment sliding 8 feet across the bed when I have to brake.
