2003-04 Brake Pads

Are the 2003 and 2004 brake pads the exact same?

I have the supposed low dust 2004 pads but they are still covering my chrome wheels with dust and I want to go get ceramic. No places seem to have info on 2004 Expedition ceramic pads.

Any info would be greatly appreciated !

Raybestos has quite stops for 03. PGD 934QS for the front. Todd please tell me what size rims/tires you have.

I have 22 inch Chrome ION 188 rims. On Kumho 305/45/22's. I feel the "You need oversized rotors and calipers" speech coming on.

hee hee

I've posted several pictures already.. but since it's handy.. I'll post it again.

Thumbs up

Thanks alot, they look great. No speech from me. I'm trying to decide which rims to get! I will however get the horrible 03 pads replaced with new ones before I put the wheels on. Can't decide between 20's or 22's.

I still need to know if the 2003 and 2004 brake pads are the exact same thing. That way I can look for 2003 ceramic pads because a lot of local auto parts stores aren't updated for 2004 brake pads yet.

I want ceramic.

low dusting. The current pads, after a 5 mile drive, will leave a thin layer of black dust all over the rims. I can write my name in the rim. I had ceramic on my last truck with chrome wheels and virtually never saw dust.

That is for an 2003, my initial question is are the 2003 and 2004 brake pads the exact same? because I have a 2004.

I appeciate all your help with this. I'd prefer the raybestos anyhow, that's what I had on my last truck.

I happen to be reviewing the TSB's and found that any Expy made before 12/18/2003 may be subject to the old brake pads. I thought I had the new ones but looked at my door sticker and found my Expy was made in 11/03. This means I probably have the old brake pads.

I have a appointment Monday morning at 7am to have the brake pads looked at. They were hesitant and tried to give me the run around about the brakes. But after asking what the TSB is all about they said that if the "customer had a concern" about something that fell into the TSB then they will look at it and if they determine it needs to be replaced then they will replace it as warranty work.

Hopefully, I'll get the new brake pads come monday morning and my brake dust will be a lot better and I won't need to go look for ceramic pads for quite some time. We'll see.

Article No.
04-5-2 BRAKES - BRAKE DUST - REVISED BRAKE LININGS - VEHICLES BUILT PRIOR TO 12/18/2003

Publication Date: March 5, 2004

FORD: 2003-2004 EXPEDITION
LINCOLN: 2003-2004 NAVIGATOR

This article supersedes TSB 04-1-1 to update the service part information.

ISSUE:
Customer dissatisfaction with brake dust level on vehicles produced before 12/18/2003.

The brake linings on 2003-2004 Expedition/Navigator vehicles are designed to interact with the brake rotors in such a way as to keep the rotors smooth, minimizing rotor runout and thickness variation. The brake dust that is generated as a result of this interaction does not indicate a performance concern with the vehicle's brake system, and is considered a normal condition by Ford Motor Company.

Ford Motor Company recognizes however that some customers may object to brake dust for appearance reasons. Effective 12/18/03, the brake linings on Expedition/Navigator have been revised. The revised linings will generate less dust. The revised linings are also being made available for service, as Service Kit 4L1Z-2001-BA. This kit contains BOTH front and rear linings. A coordinated front and rear lining change is required in order to avoid making the vehicle noncompliant with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 135. Do not mix the parts in the 4L1Z-2001-BA Kit with any other brake linings.

Per the Warranty and Policy Manual, parts and labor needed to maintain the vehicle due to normal wear and tear are the responsibility of the vehicle owner, and are not covered under the New Vehicle Limited Warranty. Because brake dust is due to normal wear and tear, replacing brake linings for a dust condition is not covered under bumper-to-bumper coverage. For 2003 model year Navigator customers the Lincoln Commitment covers normal brake wear (but not brake dust) for 3 years/36,000 miles, whichever occurs first. Some ESP plans may also cover worn brake linings. Consult OASIS to see if brake linings are covered as a provision of the customer's plan. Again, brake linings may be replaced for wear, but replacement of linings for a brake dust condition is not covered by either the New Vehicle Warranty, Lincoln Commitment, or ESP.

ACTION:
Replace brake linings, and ancillary parts if necessary, with revised brake linings.

SERVICE PROCEDURE
Follow instructions included in Kit 4L1Z-2001-BA and Workshop Manual Sections 206-03 and 206-04.

NOTE: A COORDINATED FRONT AND REAR LINING CHANGE IS REQUIRED IN ORDER TO AVOID MAKING THE VEHICLE NONCOMPLIANT WITH FEDERAL MOTOR VEHICLE SAFETY STANDARD 135. DO NOT USE THE 4L1Z-2001-BA PART NUMBER WITH ANY OTHER REAR BRAKE LINING.

NOTE: IT IS NOT NECESSARY TO MACHINE THE ROTORS BEFORE INSTALLING THE NEW LININGS, UNLESS OTHERWISE DIRECTED BY THE WORKSHOP MANUAL.

NOTE: VEHICLES BUILT BEFORE JULY 15, 2003 MAY REQUIRE REPLACEMENT OF THE HOLD-DOWN CLIP, AND RETAINING PINS, THE FIRST TIME THE BRAKE LININGS ARE REPLACED. SERVICE KIT 4L1Z-2001-BA KIT CONTAINS DETAILS ON HOW TO DETERMINE IF THESE PARTS MUST BE CHANGED. YOU MAY WISH TO ORDER THESE PARTS ALONG WITH THE BRAKE LINING KITS, TO AVOID REPAIR DELAYS.
