i have a 92 f-150 5.0. My problem is it overheats while i'm driving in the sand in 4WD, also when i'm driving on logging roads not in 4WD. speeds are usually 25-30 mph when it overheats. it never overheats while normal driving. i have changed the thermostat but still have the same problem. i hate to think about it but is it possible that it's my water pump and is there a way i can find out without replacing it.......any help would be great
It could be the water pump and it could also be your clutch fan. I would check for air bubbles in your coolant (cavitation from the worn pump) and make sure your clutch is engaging for the fan. If those check out, a pusher electric fan on the front may be the ticket.
I jusr replaced my fan clutch. Mine wasn't overheating but the A/C high pressure was elevated. On first look I thought the fan clutch was good, but a mechanic told me the way to check is run engine hot, one person shutdown while 2nd person watches fan, fan should brake to stop in one revolution. If it revolves 2-3 times it is definitely gone.
