I have a '94 E-150 w/300-6(4.9) and it sure does tach-out awful high! When I let off of it (even just going 55) it feels like I'm hitting the brake, it slows down so fast! I don't have overdrive..should I put another tranny in it with o-drive? or bigger rear-end gears? how hard is the 2nd choice?
The easiest swap to an Overdrive tranny is an AOD.
AOD's were non-computer controlled till 93 in trucks. This being a good thing since your computer won't run an E4OD.
You'd need the Transmission from preferrably 92-93 F or E series with 302 and AOD with output yoke. The sixes didnt have the AOD after 89ish.
The flexplate for 300/AOD combo.
Shift cable ancillary hardware, since the lever ratio may be different than your current C6.
Driveshaft, may need custom fabbing, but you can probably get by with your original if you get the long tail AOD.
Throttle Vavle cable, the one from the 302/AOD will work with the six.
AOD Van dipstick, V8 dipstick works, but needs the upper bracket attached with a piece of strap steel.
Thanks so much for the replies. I do know that the tranny is shifting into "high", but I was talking to a fellow truck driver, and he said he put a 4-11 posi in his van, and increased MPG from 13 (where mine is) to 20 on the highway! Was he "pulling" my leg? How do I know my present gears? #s on the punkin? Have no manual. I sure don't want to replace a good tranny!! Thanks again.
