Kar-puter...aka Win 8.1 tablet in Excursion

Following Tugly's recommendation, I ordered an Acer Switch 10 tablet that runs Win 8.1 with a detachable keyboard and 32 Gig RAM.

Currently I am running Win 8.1 AND a rooted version of Android.

I added a USBtoGo adapter so I can use the micro USB on the tablet itself as well as the one on the keyboard for AutoEnginuity. Now I can use it without the keyboard, or use that USB connector for something else

I have successfully run AE this way and have loaded TorquePro. I will test that app later today.

I'll get some pics and more info up soon.

In the meantime, here is a method to install your Win 8.1 apps to the SDCARD, even though it says you CAN'T do it

I ordered a UHS-I (Class 10) 64Gig SDCARD so it would be fast.

Here's what I wrote and posted elsewhere about using mklink command. I've successfully used it for sync'd directories and remote storage devices, too.

mklink /D linkname linkdirectory

For example, I installed Evernote to C:\Program Files\Evernote

Evernote does not allow you to install to SDCard.

I have a directory on drive D: (my SDCard) called D:\Program Files

I closed Evernote and used Taskman to end all Evernote running files and MOVED the Evernote directory to D:\Program Files\Evernote

Then open elevated CMD and browse to C:\Program Files

type: mklink /D Evernote "D:\Program Files\Evernote"

Be sure to use the original directory names.

Your program(s) will run perfectly fine and never know the difference, except they will have much more room on the external SDCard and your OS will have lots more breathing space on C:

This will work with just about any program that doesn't access by sector (primarily disk utility programs, maybe antivirus, a few odd things maybe).

Hope you find it useful.
More to come...

Hi Chris. BlueStacks, per Tugly's recommendation. Then you can google Youtube on how to bypass the paid version or download game requirements, which essentially just roots android and uses an older version of the software without the requirements.

I rooted it, but will likely install a fresh version at some point, without BlueStacks, just because it will be a cleaner install and avoid any potential licensing issues (I'm not sure if they are or can license android install, or it's a custom version or what?). I'll post that info when I do it later, too.

For now, I consider it just a test install. It's clunky with Play Store, since Google changed how it works

Stay tuned for more as I get time to play with it...

Bluestacks does not support Bluetooth unfortunately. It is strictly an emulator and not a dual boot. I have had many conversations with the development team and they were pretty adiment about not looking into this part of the system as it is solely dependent on a variety of drivers per device.

A viable option that is currently in development is Console Os. This product is pushing for native microsoft/android on a variety of devices. the device list is currently small but it does support all peripherals including Bluetooth. Console Os vs Bluestacks

That's a bummer!!!

The day I was going to test TorquePro with my BT ELM327, my tablet was dead. I found out that if you leave BlueStacks running in its emulator window, power management doesn't let it power down properly- at least that's what I think did it

Thanks for the info and the link. I'll have to look into it, too!

You are correct the emulator disable the power management I too had this issue.

Ya I have been trying to figure this out since Tugly had mentioned it. there should actually be a thread I started on this the day he said bluestacks to me. I have not found any actual solutions for my case as I am running a Microsoft surface pro 3 and it is not on the Console Os list.

I wonder if any of the bluetooth sharing type android apps can bridge that problem?

Make Windows connect to BT, then have it shared as a "device" ??

Hmm...

You're right, though, we should work out a solution for this

I have been down that road as well lol I tried different options for turning the Bluetooth into a WiFi signal through emulation and I have tried using it as a built in com device with no luck. I look for options whenever I have free time. maybe with two heads we can figure this thing out. I would love to have one device in the truck.
