Auto Transmission Shifting Problem
My Dad has a 1991 Aerostar with the 4.0 v-6, AWD and the auto trans, 111,000 on the odometer. When starting off first thing in the morning, when the truck is cold the trans won't shift out of first into second gear correctly. The trans allows the engine to rev all the way up to near red-line before shifting. He drained the pan and found sludge and some metal shavings. Does anyone have any useful information or experience about this? He has been told that it is the governor going bad, that it is best to put a reman tranny in it.

Auto Transmission Shifting Problem
Gunk and metal particles aren't a healthy sign. The governor could be bad but it could also be a stuck shifter valve depending on how much "gunk" is in the system. A rebuilt unit runs approx $1200 plus installation. You may want to try having the transmission flushed out and see if this may cure a stuck valve. It won't help a worn or bad governor which means rebuild or replacement. Good luck!
