my 91 4.0 litre has been tapping on start up for several months, it is gone after 15 min of driving. i have tried oil change with flush, which didn't help. i figure its the valves. engine has 140 thou miles on it runs well,no smoke. i'm the second owner, i figure the first guy didn't do much maintainence. i wonder it its a good idea to pull the heads and get them reconditioned? any ideas? will getting the heads done strain the rest of the engine? its so hard getting in there i wonder if you can even get the heads off with the engine in the van, anyone know?
I think the engine should be rebuilt with that high mileage as the bearings are probably worn. I have had experiences in the past where a new head job on and older block caused the blow by and the engine to use oil. Even if you pulled the heads off in car, putting them on with the right torque/gasket fit would be a problem. I have a 93 4.0 and there is not enough room to to the torqueing of the heads properly.Let me know what route you take as I will be pulling my engine in the future.

Plugs all look good and mileage hasn't suffered any so I'm thinking it is probably a sticky lifter. It too, resolves after warm up. In my humble opinion, not worth pulling the engine apart for this.
thanks for the input guys. i think i'll wait till it gets worse. weighting the options and the labor involved its not worth it to tackle it yet. the engine runs smooth otherwise. its just the tapping is annoying on an other wise great vehicle..
I have a 97 AWD 4.0 with 134.000 miles. The engine makes a similar sound only at start up and is gone within a few seconds. I have used K&N Filter and Mobil One 90% of the vans life and changed at proper intervels so I know it has been maintained properly. It still runs string with no oil use. I think it is just a noise common to many 4.0.
