how to remove headrest

The 3 headrest on the 2nd row are removable, but the 2 for front rows are not. Does anyone know how to remove them? My problem is the ones on the front row doesn't fit my head. No matter how high or low I adjust it, seems like the headrest is tilting too much forward. The headrest for the 2nd row fits me better. I want to move the headrest from 2nd row to the driver seat.

The shop manual simply says "Release the 2 locking tabs and remove the head restraint." and has arrows pointing to the collars where the headrest legs go into.

i don't know how it is for 2001-2004, but for my 05 Escape, the 2 front headrest are designed so that you can not remove it. I can press the tab and slide headrest up and down, but doesn't seems like they let people remove it.

I havent looked at an 05 so I just went by what the 05 shop manual said.
Any chance the tabs pull out to completely release or something like that?
The headrests have to come out somehow in case the seat needs to come apart to be worked on or whatever.

At the base of your headrest, there's a button you need to push to raise or lower the headrest, right? On the opposite side there is a clip that you will have to remove (I used a very small screwdriver) with a tiny hole. Once you remove the clip (take care so that you don't ding it up), you can see a slender metal locking clip inside the plastic housing. You can press it in (using a paper clip or something similiar) to release the headrest or remove it altogether. If you leave it in, you may need someone to actually lift the headrest while you're pressing both release button and the metal locking clip. After you're done, carefully replace the plastic cover and you're set.
