I have an 87 f150 with a 3 speed transmission. I've been doing some searches on this site and it seems my rpm is much higher than it should be. Its about 2600 at 55 mph. Can anyone tell me if this is about right, and is it hurting my engine?

My opinion is that your RPM range is fine. When you start getting up past 4000 RPM, then id get concerned. Other than that, I would just turn up the radio, check the fluids under the hood once in a while, and leave good enough alone. :P
I have the opposite problem.. with the combination of tall tires, and 3.55 gears, I don't hit 2000 rpm in fifth gear until I am going 63 mph... that in conjunction with a barely adequate 5.0 engine with little low rpm torque and the heavy chassis of the f-250, makes 5th gear useless for 95% of the driving I do... 4.10's would set me up nicely...
