I have a 78 Ford Bronco with 4inch lift kit and 33" tires. Engine is a 351m/400 with a c6 trans i believe is what its called. And a NP205 transfer case. Well my problem is with the transmission. It will shiftfrom 1st to 2nd fine but will not go into 3rd. I was wondering if anybody new what could be causing this. I hope its something I can fix a little easier than swapping transmission. I have extra engine and trans for it but would like not to go that far cause I just put that one in after completely rebuilding engine and the trans that I got was rebuilt through a shop but I had it for 8 months before I put it on there(only cause i didnt need it cause engine took a crap anyway shortly after I got that back) so they wont do anything about it cause its been so long. I can figure out engine problems but when it comes to transmissions I dont know anything about them. So any help I would greatly appreciate.
The kickdown should not affect it going into third, if it was set wrong it just would not go down into second or first when passing.
The first thing to do is ch3eck the fluid level. If it is good, one thing that I have experienced with the C6 is that when they start to go, first third gear goes and then second and then it won't go at all. If so, at least a C6 is cheap to rebuild (unlike the E4OD).
I put fluid in it. It was reading nothing. But now I must have found out were it was all leaking out of. Theres this silver fitting on the passenger side just a little down from the top of transmission(right underneath the cover thats over the 4x4 shifter) that when I drive it it seems like its fine in first but after that it sprays out of the center of this thing. I have no idea what it is so if anybody has any idea please let me know. hope I dont end up rebuilding it but if thats what has to be done then oh well have to do it. I didnt like doing it to a transmission out of a Dodge caravan let alone something four times as big and who knows how more it weighs. Thanks for all the help.
