all interior power failed

Hey guys,

Haven't been back in a while due to the Bronco's semi-retirement. I have been only occasionally (every three weeks or so) firing this 90 bronco up. The last time or three the interior power has been gone. No windows, no radio, no winshield wipers, no tailgate but the ignition is fine, the exterior lights work and the instrument gauges work.

i checked the individual fuses and they show continuity, i tested just a couple of grounds, and the leads from the battery. Is there a single power feed to all of the interior stuff? Any other ideas as to a culprit?

Pretty stumped,
Jim

Possibly the ignition switch - not where the key goes, but the actual switch. When they go bad, they cause all sorts of problems like this. Most of the power runs through it.

Ok, I can't be 100% certain of this however, its a start. Every one of the circuits you mentioned is tied to the same ground on 1992 and later Broncos. I know this for a fact based on wiring diagrams. I can't be certain because the diagrams for 1990 and 1991 models do not list the grounding location for any of the circuits. However, it stands to reason that model years so close MAY be grounded in the same locations. The grounding location listed is behind the bottom of the left cowl panel which should be the driver's side somwhere below the dash and behind the parking brake pedal/release. Since these circuits are fused seperately, the only thing they really have in common that could cause this problem would be the ground.

Hmmm

Guys,

Thanks a bunch. I think you are both correct, to some extent. It was indeed a problem with the ignition switch. Turns out it is not malfunctioning, however. It isn't mounted well. Thus a grounding problem also.

The switch is mounted on top of the steering column. There appear to be bent metal tabs that hold the switch/wiring harness combo fixed to the column. This must be the ground connection also.

I can see that the switch is off of the steering column on the side that i can't reach. When i held the switch assembly tight to the steering column enerything worked, but it won't stay down. I cant disconnect the switch entirely without bending the other tab, and that's the only thing holding it in.

Should i epoxy the sucker down or should i do something more creative?

Thanks again for the help,
Jim
