Water pump plug question?

I purchased a new water pump from shopdiesel. Pump works great but im installing a coolant filter and the plug on the side of the pump is what i understand to tap into.
My question is what size is the square plug suppose to be, a 3/8's socket is to big and a 1/4 is to small.
Is there a square driver that fits this or is my plug the wrong size.

Thanks in advance for any help or advise.
Harry

They do make sockets for square drive plugs. It is probably 5/16". I have a set of the these sockets at work. I originally bought them to remove the oil galley plugs on engines I was rebuilding. I too am also going to install a coolant filter, but have not checked on the size of the plug. I have purchased everything but the hose needed. Right now, time is not my friend. Seems to be becoming a winter time project. I call my truck "Big Red" too.

Try your local auto parts or hardware store. I got my set from Snap On many years ago. BTW, My waterpump has an external square drive plug. I'm sorry I can't tell you the exact size you will need for yours.

If the plug's not too tight, you could grind the opposite 2 points off of a bolt with a 5/16" head bolt and make a tool. You then could maybe break it loose with visegrips on the bolt shank. Another idea! Get a piece of bar/key stock and turn it with a wrench.

Guys, just use a long 1/4" drive extension they fit great... Edit here, I just read where you said a 1/4" was too small. I have a snap on that fits mine perfect. Might make sure that yours is not grown up with something on the inside of the drive square. The 1/4" extension fits mine to a "T"...

Talking Wrench

I bought a small 11mm open end wrench @ Sears. (Cost about $10) A little bit of a tight fit but, it worked. Never thought about trying the 1/4 extension ! I kept the plug after I installed my coolant filter. I'm going to go see if my extension fits just out of curiousity.

You going to change yours over to the Gold Coolant ? (If you had the Green) Great time to do it and you can ditch the SCA's.
