I just got my hands on this '80 351w that seems to be in good shape (only 60K), probably cause it's in a motorhome that didn't get driven enough. The problem I'm having is as follows. Cold the engine works great, good idle, good speed, slow on the start, but it is hauling a 1ton van chassis with a motorhome body. The problem appears if I drive for 15 mins or more over 80km/hr. The engine starts to retard itself, like it's either starving for gas or the timing is bieng thowen way off, if I continue to drive it turns into a snail on wheels. Give it five mins to cool and it's fine again. Already tried fuel filter, carb cleaner, confirm vacumn routing, adjustable choke spring. My only thought left is a malfunctioning governor or speed sensor, but I'm not even sure which module that is (probably connected to the throttle though). Any opinions?
I would say you need to clean out the fuel system. It may be some crap plugging up the fuel tank pickup. It settles away when cold, but after it is warmed up and being driven then it clogs the pickup again. I would assume becaus eit has sat alot that the fuel tank probably has rust deposits flaking off inside (moisture and fuel not being used for long periods to cycle it). It could also be a bad fuel pump that when warmed up loses pressure to the carb. I would put a clear inline fuel filter or a small fuel guage on the vehicle to see if you get fuel pressure at the carb when this occurs.

Clogged cats and or mufflers?
Clogged air intake/filter?
PCV and EGR functioning properly?
Just a few more rabbits for you to chase that popped into my head! Good luck.
