Well i have decided to replace the fluids in my SUV because of the cost .I will replace the fluids in the following: Transmission,Rear End,Cooling System and Transfer case. Is there anything i should be exceptionally carefull of or tips anyone can give me to make sure i get all the fluid out of the trans including the torque converter and cooling system.
Tranny fluid is simply dropping the pan and reusing the gasket. Not sure on an 01', but check for a drain plug on the torque converter. Make sure you clean your magnetic pickup in the pan.
Don't see any reason to replace the rearend fluid or transfer case. Just make sure they are topped off.
Check your hoses for the coolant, no sense having one blow after a fresh change. The lower one will be a bitch, it has a looping "Y" to the neck of the oil filter and is fairly rigid at the junction and will fight you to get it out. Make sure your putting in the exact type of fluid coming out. The green stuff does not mix with the extended run orange fluid, mixed they become a corrosive and will eat your cylinder heads.
Hey thanks for the tips i will drain all of the fluid from the coolant system.I'm curious why you suggested not changing the rear end-fluid or transfer case.
You should be able to go at least 150k on them, I have 356k on my 2x4 and did my rear about 325k for the first time and the only reason I did it was because my rear seals needed replacing. F series trucks have sythetic fluid in them after 96', it states either on the rear tag or manual that the fluid should not need changing that it is sythetic. The transfer case is not used that much and generally doesn't require much maintenance, if at all.
