I lifted my truck and put some 35's on it.... I've got the x cab 5.4 fx4,,, I'm wondering what gears I could put in the rear end to help compensate for the power loss due to the bigger tires... Are they expensive and hard to change???
I would say 4.10s are your best bet for everyday driving. Check out http://www.4lo.com/calc/geartable.htm They aren't THAT expensive to buy the components, but unless you have done them before, I would highly suggest not doing them yourself. Especially on the new F series, the differential is tucked up inside of the truck (compared to straight axle trucks). Installed, a job to replace both front and rear setups is normally between 1200 and 3000.
This isn't something you need to worry about yet, but you can dig back into the web site..for some insite.. If I was going to put 35" rubber under my 04 Lariat I'd be looking at 4.56's.. The gears you have now should be worth something on trade.
I also put 35's on my truck. I installed 4.88 gears. But I am installing a gear vendors OD from my other truck. This will give me a new Overdrive Gear. I tow my boat 3 times a week so this is perfect for me. at 65 MPH I am at about 2600 RPM. The correct ratio to get back to stock would be about 4.33 but they dont make that set for our truck. Personally I would go with 4.56. this will give you better take off.
Because my truck was brand new I decided to have the gears installed. it cost me 700 dollars. 4wheel parts also offers a 3 year warrenty on the work I bought this again because my truck was new and it didnt make since to have a warrenty on everything but my rear end.
I put 456 gears on my suburban with 35 inch tires, with overdrive and it works great. If you put 4:10's you will actually have around 3:50, with no power. You didnt tell us what gears you have in it now. You will probably have to get a reprogrammer that you enter your vin number in and then change the tire size so you wont mess up the computer. It will only read what the tire is actually doing if you dont change it. Thats why you have no power. If you go with 33 inch tires, I would go with 4:10's
